Can a Musafir pray Jumuah salah (zuhr) by his own or does he have to pray with congregation?

Question

Can a mussafir pray jumma sallah (zuhr) by his own or he has to pray it in congregation?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

In principle, a musafir (traveller) is excused from performing Jumuah Salah.[i] If he is unable to perform jumuah salah with congregation, he should perform his Zuhr salah individually.

وَأَمَّا مَا يُكْرَهُ فِي يَوْمِ الْجُمُعَةِ فَنَقُولُ تُكْرَهُ صَلَاةُ الظُّهْرِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ بِجَمَاعَةٍ فِي الْمِصْر فِي سِجْنٍ وَغَيْرِ سِجْنٍ هَكَذَا رُوِيَ عَنْ عَلِيٍّ - رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ -، وَهَكَذَا جَرَى التَّوَارُثُ بِإِغْلَاقِ أَبْوَابِ الْمَسَاجِدِ فِي وَقْتِ الظُّهْرِ يَوْمَ الْجُمُعَةِ فِي الْأَمْصَارِ فَدَلَّ ذَلِكَ عَلَى كَرَاهَةِ الْجَمَاعَةِ فِيهَا فِي حَقِّ الْكُلِّ؛ وَلِأَنَّا لَوْ أَطْلَقْنَا لِلْمَعْذُورِ إقَامَةَ الظُّهْرِ بِالْجَمَاعَةِ فِي الْمِصْرِ فَرُبَّمَا يَقْتَدِي بِهِ غَيْرُ الْمَعْذُورِ فَيُؤَدِّي إلَى تَقْلِيلِ جَمْعِ الْجُمُعَةِ، وَهَذَا لَا يَجُوزُ؛ وَلِأَنَّ سَاكِنَ الْمِصْرِ مَأْمُورٌ بِشَيْئَيْنِ فِي هَذَا الْوَقْتِ بِتَرْكِ الْجَمَاعَاتِ وَشُهُودِ الْجُمُعَة، وَالْمَعْذُورُ قَدَرَ عَلَى أَحَدِهِمَا وَهُوَ تَرْكُ الْجَمَاعَاتِ فَيُؤْمَرُ بِالتَّرْكِ.
