Should the Walima be on the same day of the Nikah?

Question

My brother is getting married soon. We are planning to give Valima on the same day of marraige. To be precise marrige is in the morning and Valima in the afternoon. Is it permissable?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The purpose of walima is to emulate the Sunnah of Rasulullah Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam. In order to realise the full blessing of the Sunnah of walima, one should conduct the walima according to the Sunnah of Rasulullah Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam. There were two main features in the walimas of Rasulullah Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam:[1]

Firstly, the walimas of Rasulullah Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam were after consummation.

Secondly, the walimas were simple.

Nevertheless, if one wishes to have a walima after the nikah and before the consummation that too will be valid. [2]

حدثنا عبد الغفار بن داود، حدثنا يعقوب بن عبد الرحمن، ح وحدثني أحمد، حدثنا ابن وهب، قال: أخبرني يعقوب بن عبد الرحمن الزهري، عن عمرو، مولى المطلب، عن أنس بن مالك رضي الله عنه، قال: قدمنا خيبر فلما فتح الله عليه الحصن، ذكر له جمال صفية بنت حيي بن أخطب، وقد قتل زوجها وكانت عروسا، فاصطفاها النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم لنفسه، فخرج بها حتى بلغنا سد الصهباء حلت، فبنى بها رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، ثم صنع حيسا في نطع صغير، ثم قال لي: «آذن من حولك». فكانت تلك وليمته على صفية، ثم خرجنا إلى المدينة، فرأيت النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يحوي لها وراءه بعباءة، ثم يجلس عند بعيره فيضع ركبته، وتضع صفية رجلها على ركبته حتى تركب (صحيح البخارى ج8 ص334 دار البشائر)
