Can interest money be given to charity?

Question

I had been given a fairly large amount of money which I left in separate account for awhile before using the large amount of money for what it was accumulated for, however when leaving the large amount of money in a separate account it has accumulated some interest which I have left and not used.

What I want to know is what should I do with the money accumulated from interest?

can I give it to charity and if so which type of charity?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

The interest money must be given to the needy and poor people. [1]

(1) فَيَجِبُ رَدُّ عَيْنِ الرِّبَا لَوْ قَائِمًا لَا رَدُّ ضَمَانِهِ لِأَنَّهُ يُمْلَكُ بِالْقَبْضِ قُنْيَةٌ وَبَحْرٌ- (الدر المختار وحاشية ابن عابدين (رد المحتار) 5/ 169 سعيد)

(2) وَالْحَاصِلُ أَنَّهُ إنْ عَلِمَ أَرْبَابَ الْأَمْوَالِ وَجَبَ رَدُّهُ عَلَيْهِمْ، وَإِلَّا فَإِنْ عَلِمَ عَيْنَ الْحَرَامِ لَا يَحِلُّ لَهُ وَيَتَصَدَّقُ بِهِ بِنِيَّةِ صَاحِبِهِ، وَإِنْ كَانَ مَالًا مُخْتَلِطًا مُجْتَمِعًا مِنْ الْحَرَامِ وَلَا يَعْلَمُ أَرْبَابَهُ وَلَا شَيْئًا مِنْهُ بِعَيْنِهِ حَلَّ لَهُ حُكْمًا، وَالْأَحْسَنُ دِيَانَةً التَّنَزُّهُ عَنْهُ- (الدر المختار وحاشية ابن عابدين (رد المحتار) ج5 ص99- سعيد)

(3) لَوْ مَاتَ الرَّجُلُ وَكَسْبُهُ مِنْ بَيْعِ الْبَاذَقِ أَوْ الظُّلْمِ أَوْ أَخْذِ الرِّشْوَةِ يَتَوَرَّعُ الْوَرَثَةُ، وَلَا يَأْخُذُونَ مِنْهُ شَيْئًا وَهُوَ أَوْلَى بِهِمْ وَيَرُدُّونَهَا عَلَى أَرْبَابِهَا إنْ عَرَفُوهُمْ، وَإِلَّا تَصَدَّقُوا بِهَا لِأَنَّ سَبِيلَ الْكَسْبِ الْخَبِيثِ التَّصَدُّقُ إذَا تَعَذَّرَ الرَّدُّ عَلَى صَاحِبِهِ- - (الدر المختار وحاشية ابن عابدين (رد المحتار) ج6 ص385- سعيد)

(4) والسبيل في المعاصي ردها, و ذلك ههنا برد الماخوذ ان تمكن برده بان عرف صاحبه, و بالتصدق به ان لم يعرفه, ليصل اليه نفع ماله ان كان لا يصل اليه عين ماله. (الفتاوى العالمكيرية ج5 ص349- رشيديه)
