Is it permissible to perform two Rakaats Nafl before Maghrib Salaah?

Question

Is it permissible to read the 2 rakat sunnat of maghrib before the 3 rakat Maghreb prayer?
Did the sahaba (RA) do the maghrib prayer that way? In Saudi when we go the haramain we notice Arabs and some others doing it that way, im just confused. Will I be sinful for doing it that way?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

According to the Hanafi Madhab (school of thought), there is no Sunnah or Nafl Salah before the Fardh Salah of Maghrib. [1]

However, if one is in a place where Nafl Salah before Maghrib is performed, for example in the Haramain (Makkah and Madinah), then one may perform the Nafl before Maghrib Salah.[2]

وههنا وقت آخر، وهو ما بعد غروب الشمس قبل أن يصلي المغرب والصلاة فيه مكروه، لكن لا لمعنى في الوقت، بل لتأخير المغرب.
