When does the time for Zuhr Salaah end in the Hanafi Madhab?

Question

When does the time for zohar salah end. Does it end right before asar time begins in the hanfi madhab?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

According to the Hanafi Madhab, Zohor salah time will end when the shadow of any object is just a little before, double its normal size. Then Asar salah time will begin when the shadow of an object is double its size. Hence Zohor time extends right up till before Asar time commences [i]

[i] وَالصَّحِيحُ رِوَايَةُ مُحَمَّدٍ عَنْهُ، فَإِنَّهُ رُوِيَ فِي خَبَرِ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ، وَآخِرُ وَقْتِ الظُّهْرِ حِينَ يَدْخُلُ وَقْتُ الْعَصْرِ وَهَذَا يَنْفِي الْوَقْتَ الْمُهْمَلَ، ثُمَّ لَا بُدَّ مِنْ مَعْرِفَةِ زَوَالِ الشَّمْسِ، رُوِيَ عَنْ مُحَمَّدٍ أَنَّهُ قَالَ: حَدُّ الزَّوَالِ أَنْ يَقُومَ الرَّجُلُ مُسْتَقْبِلَ الْقِبْلَةِ فَإِذَا مَالَتْ الشَّمْسُ عَنْ يَسَارِهِ فَهُوَ الزَّوَالُ، وَأَصَحُّ مَا قِيلَ فِي مَعْرِفَةِ الزَّوَالِ قَوْلُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ شُجَاعٍ الْبَلْخِيّ: أَنَّهُ يَغْرِزُ عُودًا مُسْتَوِيًا فِي أَرْضٍ مُسْتَوِيَةٍ، وَيَجْعَلُ عَلَى مَبْلَغِ الظِّلِّ مِنْهُ عَلَامَةً فَمَا دَامَ الظِّلُّ يَنْتَقِصُ مِنْ الْخَطِّ فَهُوَ قَبْلَ الزَّوَالِ، فَإِذَا وَقَفَ لَا يَزْدَادُ وَلَا يَنْتَقِصُ فَهُوَ سَاعَةُ الزَّوَالِ، وَإِذَا أَخَذَ الظِّلُّ فِي الزِّيَادَةِ فَالشَّمْسُ قَدْ زَالَتْ.

وَإِذَا أَرَدْتَ مَعْرِفَةَ فَيْءِ الزَّوَالِ فَخُطَّ عَلَى رَأْسِ مَوْضِعِ الزِّيَادَةِ خَطًّا فَيَكُونُ مِنْ رَأْسِ الْخَطِّ إلَى الْعَوْدِ فَيْءُ الزَّوَالِ فَإِذَا صَارَ ظِلَّ الْعُودِ مِثْلَيْهِ مِنْ رَأْسِ الْخَطِّ لَا مِنْ الْعُودِ خَرَجَ وَقْتُ الظُّهْرِ وَدَخَلَ وَقْتُ الْعَصْرِ عِنْدَ أَبِي حَنِيفَةَ.

وَإِذَا صَارَ ظِلُّ الْعُودِ مِثْلَيْهِ مِنْ رَأْسِ الْخَطِّ خَرَجَ وَقْتُ الظُّهْرِ وَدَخَلَ وَقْتُ الْعَصْرِ عِنْدَهُمْ.

عن أبي حنيفة أنه إذا صار الظل أقل من قامتين خرج وقت الظهر، ولا يدخل وقت العصر حتى يصير ظل كل شيء مثليه، قال أبو الحسن: وهذه الرواية أصح، فعلى هاتين الروايتين يكون بين الوقتين وقت مهمل، لا من الظهر ولا من العصر وهو الذي يسميه الناس بين الصلاتين، وإنما يعتبر ظل كل شيء مثله أو مثليه سوى فيء الزوال.
