Is it permissible to sketch bodies of females for dress designing?

Question

Is it impermissible to draw only body structures with body, hair and full dress of ladies as sketches only not the real face or body just in a courses of dress making after which dresses are made according to that sketches?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is permissible to draw a specific sketch of a person’s size, height and width of the body to sew a garment according to those specifications. In simple, the sketch is a measure used for sewing the garment which is permissible. It is not permissible to draw the head and face.[1]

"قلت أرأيت رجلا صلى في بيت و في القبلة تماثيل مصورة و قد قطع رؤوسها؟ قال: لا يضر ذلك شيئا؛ لأن هذا ليس بتمثيل". الأصل للإمام محمد الشيباني ( 1\184)

"أو مقطوعة الرأس أو الوجه". الدر المختار مع رد المحتار (1\648)

"و في الخانية: والكراهة إذا كانت الصورة كبيرة و تبدو للناظر من غير تكلف فإذا كانت صغيرة أو ممحوة الرأس لا بأس به". الفتاوى التاتارخانية (2/203)

"ففيه دليل على أن التصاوير إذا قطعت رؤوسها، فصارت كهيئة الشجرة" فيض الباري (7\337)

"عن أبي هريرة، قال: استأذن جبريل عليه السلام على النبي صلى الله عليه و سلم فقال: ادخل، فقال: كيف أدخل! و في بيتك ستر، و فيه تصاوير، فإما أن تقطع رأسها أو تجعل بساطا يطأ" (النسائي ح 5365)

"و هو ما يكون من الصور التي فيها الروح مما لم يقطع رأسه" فتح الباري (10\430)

الدر المختار مع رد المحتار (1\648) "لا اعتبار بإزالة الحاجبين أو العينين".
