Taking interest with intention of giving it to charity
Question
I live in UK and I have a current account with LLoyds Bank. I requested a current account because it does not give me any interest money. There are saving accounts other than current account where you can get interest. Someone told me, "if you have money in your bank then put it in a saving account and the interest you get, should give it to poor and dont consume it". Now, i would like to know the ruling, Is it permissible to still put money in saving account in an intention to give it to charity causes even I have a choice to use current account(interest free), Can I still take interest on it with the intention only to give it to charity.
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
It is important to mention that dealing with conventional banks (such as Loyds Bank) is based solely on need and necessity[1]. Whilst making use of the bank facility, if one has accrued interest in his account, he should dispose of that amount in charity without the intention of reward as soon as possible[2]. Furthermore, if there is an interest free account available, one should abstain from opening an account which gives interest.
