Question

I wanted to ask what does Shariah says about proposing a woman having the same name as the man's mother or sister? I mean is it totally fine or has Shariah shown any sort of reprehensibility in this regard?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is permissible for a person to propose to a woman having the same name as his mother or sister. Hadhrat Ali’s [Radhiyallahu Anhu] mother’s name was Fatimah bint Asad Radhiyallahu Anha, and his wife’s name was Hadhrat Fatimah Radhiyallahu Anha, the beloved daughter of Rasulullah Salallahu Alayhi Wasallam.
