Can I give Sadaqah in place of Qurbani due to Covid-19?

Question

Is it ok to dristribute money as charity instead of sacrificing cattle for Eid ul Adha due to covid 19 situation? Due to covid 19 it is dificult to purchae cattle by a family whose husband abroad.

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

If a person has cash/items over and above his needs to the value of the Zakaat Nisaab on the days of Qurbani (i.e. 10,11 and 12th of Zul Hijjah), then Qurbani will be Waajib upon him.

It is necessary to slaughter an animal for the Qurbani to be valid. Merely giving the value of a Qurbani animal in charity will not suffice.[i]

There are many organizations that provide the service of doing Qurbani. You may do your Qurbani through a reliable organization.

الْأُضْحِيَّةُ إرَاقَةُ الدَّمِ مِنْ النَّعَمِ دُونَ سَائِرِ الْحَيَوَانِ، وَالدَّلِيلُ عَلَى أَنَّهَا الْإِرَاقَةُ أَنَّهُ لَوْ تَصَدَّقَ بِعَيْنِ الْحَيَوَانِ لَمْ يَجُزْ، وَالصَّدَقَةُ بِلَحْمِهَا بَعْدَ الذَّبْحِ مُسْتَحَبٌّ وَلَيْسَ بِوَاجِبٍ حَتَّى لَوْ لَمْ يَتَصَدَّقْ بِهِ جَازَ قَالَ فِي الْوَاقِعَاتِ شِرَاءُ الْأُضْحِيَّةِ بِعَشَرَةِ دَرَاهِمَ خَيْرٌ مِنْ التَّصَدُّقِ بِأَلْفِ دِرْهَمٍ لِأَنَّ الْقُرْبَةَ الَّتِي تَحْصُلُ بِإِرَاقَةِ الدَّمِ لَا تَحْصُلُ بِالصَّدَقَةِ قَالَ - رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ - (الْأُضْحِيَّةُ وَاجِبَةٌ) أَيْ التَّضْحِيَةُ لِأَنَّ الْوُجُوبَ مِنْ صِفَاتِ الْفِعْلِ إلَّا أَنَّ الشَّيْخَ قَالَ ذَلِكَ تَوْسِعَةً وَمَجَازًا وَيَعْنِي بِقَوْلِهِ وَاجِبَةً عَمَلًا لَا اعْتِقَادًا حَتَّى لَا يَكْفُرَ جَاحِدُهَا.

المبسوط للسرخسي (12/ 13(

قَالَ (وَالْأُضْحِيَّةُ أَحَبُّ إلَيَّ مِنْ التَّصَدُّقِ بِمِثْلِ ثَمَنِهَا) وَالْمُرَادُ فِي أَيَّامِ النَّحْرِ؛ لِأَنَّ الْوَاجِبَ التَّقَرُّبُ بِإِرَاقَةِ الدَّمِ، وَلَا يَحْصُلُ ذَلِكَ بِالتَّصَدُّقِ بِالْقِيمَةِ فَفِي حَقِّ الْمُوسِرِ الَّذِي يَلْزَمُهُ ذَلِكَ لَا إشْكَالَ أَنَّهُ لَا يَلْزَمُهُ التَّصَدُّقُ بِقِيمَتِهِ، وَهَذَا؛ لِأَنَّهُ لَا قِيمَةَ لِإِرَاقَةِ الدَّمِ وَإِقَامَةُ الْمُتَقَوِّمِ مُقَامَ مَا لَيْسَ بِمُتَقَوِّمٍ لَا تَجُوزُ وَإِرَاقَةُ الدَّمِ خَالِصُ حَقِّ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى، وَلَا وَجْهَ لِلتَّعْلِيلِ فِيمَا هُوَ خَالِصُ حَقِّ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى
