Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Brother in Islam,

Thoughts and doubts regarding one’s Aqeedah and belief are not uncommon for those that have Imaan. Such thoughts are Waswasah (whispers) from Shaytan and are a sign of true and strong Imaan (Faith). One should expel such thoughts from one’s mind and not dwell on these thoughts.

The Sahabah (RadiyAllahu Anhum) would also get such thoughts and complained to Nabi (Sallallahu Alaihi Wassallam) regarding them. Consider the following narrations:

Translation: It is narrated from Abu Hurairah (RadiyAllahu Anhu) that he said, ‘Some companions of the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wassallam) came and asked him, “Verily we perceive in our minds such things which each one of us considers too grave to express.” He (Sallallahu Alaihi Wassallam) said: “Do you really perceive it?” They said: “Yes”. (Upon this) He (Sallallahu Alaihi Wassallam) remarked: “That is clear faith.” (Saheeh Muslim: 132)

Translation: It is narrated from Abdullah ibn Mas'ood (RadiyAllahu Anhu) that he said, the Messenger (Sallallahu Alaihi Wassallam) was asked about (satanic) whispers and he (Sallallahu Alaihi Wassallam) said: “It is pure faith.” (Saheeh Muslim: 133)

Translation: Abdullah ibn Abbas (RadiyAllahu Anhu) narrated: A man came to the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wassallam) and said: Oh Messenger of Allah! one of us has thoughts of such a nature that he would rather be reduced to charcoal than speak about them. He said: Allah is Most Great, Allah is Most Great, Allah is Most Great. Praise be to Allah Who has reduced the guile of the devil to evil prompting. (Sunan Abu Dawood: 5112)[1]

It is clear from the above narrations that such thoughts are, to an extent, normal and should not concern you as they are a sign of faith. Therefore, your thoughts do not constitute Shirk or Kufr.

In order to rid oneself of such thoughts in the future, one should do the following:

Ignore such thoughts and focus one’s mind elsewhere.[2]

Recite Suratul Ikhlas, Suratul Falaq and Surah An-Nas in the morning and evening thrice. Do this at night as well whilst blowing into your hands and thereafter wipe your entire body.[6]

Sit in the company of the pious and righteous.
