Question

I have received some interest from my bank. I would like to know if it would be permissible for me to pay my annual credit card fees with the interest money. I have done so in the past, but I have heard it is wrong to do so. If it was wrong what should I do?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

It is incumbent upon a person to dispose of the interest money as Sadaqah (charity) to the poor who are entitled to receive Zakat without the intention of receiving reward. [1]

Accordingly, one cannot use interest money for one’s personal expenses. In the enquired scenario, the annual credit card fees are a legitimate charge against the card holder. Therefore, it is not permissible to use interest money to pay for one’s annual credit card fees.[2]

You state you have previously used interest money to pay for your credit card fees in the past. We advise that you calculate the amount of interest you used to pay for your credit card fees and give that amount as Sadaqah. Moreover, make Taubah and Istighfar and refrain from doing so in the future.
