Question

What is the ruling of sleeping with one's pets, cat pet? I read in an Islamic Book that one should not? Is this correct? Is this something that Rasullah SAW taught?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh

We advise against sleeping with one’s cat due to some of the following health risks. [i]

1) Less sleep - Cats are nocturnal animals and often active at night, sleep can be easily interrupted.

2) Bacteria - Infections such as salmonellosis and bartonellosis can be transmitted to humans.

3) Parasites - Cats can bring a many types of parasites into the bed, including fleas and mites. Intestinal parasites can also be transferred through exposure to cat fecal matter.

4) Waste matter – Detritus from the cats litter tray that can end up in the bed, exposing the bed to all forms of bacteria.

In light of the above. It will be better for a cat to have a separate designated sleeping area. [ii]

Can Muslims keep pets such as cats and dogs?

“If you are concerned about break-ins and theft and that is one of the reasons why you are keeping a dog, then it is permissible. This falls under the category of keeping a dog for security reasons.”
