Performing Qasr after 15 days
Question
Assalam'aleykum,
I travelled to Guyana to visit my parents for two weeks. I made intention for safar and intended to return home after two weeks. I made qasr for those two weeks. but I ended up staying for one week longer because my flight got cancelled. During the extra week that I stayed I did not have intention of being Muqim so I continued to read qasr. Was what I did correct?
Answer
In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
As-salāmu 'alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.
If you intended to travel the distance of Safar and return in less than 15 days, you will be considered Musafir. However, if you intended to stay for more than 15 days whilst in Guyana, you will be considered Muqim (temporary resident).[1]
Furthermore, if you initially intended to return home within fifteen days, but your circumstances caused you to extend your stay for more than fifteen days, you will continue to shorten prayers until you make intention to stay for fifteen days or more from the day you made that intention.
Accordingly, you were correct to continue performing Qasr.
And Allah Ta'āla Knows Best
