Replying to Salam during Adhan

Question

If someone gives salam to me while the Adhan is being called, do I have to reply to him?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

At the outset, if a person is busy replying to the Adhan, it is undesirable to convey Salam to such person at that time.[1]

If a person is engaged in Ibadah i.e., Dhikr, Dua, Tilawah, or Tasbih, it is not necessary for him to reply to the Salam of a person.[2]

Replying to the Adhan is also a form of Dhikr. Therefore, a person will not be obliged to reply to a Salam during Adhan. If he is greeted during the Adhan, he may postpone the reply to the Salam until after the Adhan.
