Zakaat On Livestock

Question

Is there a difference for discharging zakaat on livestock, between those fed in the public fields and those fed with the feed purchased by the owner?

Answer

If livestock kept for breeding purposes are predominantly fed by the owner (and seldom graze in the fields) then such livestock will be exempted from Zakaat. However, if the livestock is for resale then Zakaat will have to be discharged on their value (even though they are fed by the owner.)
