Question

Should a female in haidh or a person in janabat reply to adhaan?

Answer

A person in the state of major impurity (Jazaanbat) will reply to the Azaan.

The Hanafi jurists differ regarding the ruling of a female who is in the state of menstruation. She should reply to the Azaan and also be hopeful of being rewarded for replying to the Azaan, the reason being that replying to the Azaan is also a type of zikr.

والمتابعة لكل سامع من محدث وجنب وحائض وكبير وكذا الصغير على وجه الاستحباب لأنه ذكر.

ولم أر حكم ما إذا فرغ المؤذن ولم يتابعه السامع هل يجيب بعد فراغه وينبغي أنه إن طال الفصل لا يجيب وإلا يجيب وفي المجتبى في ثمانية مواضع إذا سمع الأذان لا يجيب في الصلاة واستماع خطبة الجمعة وثلاث خطب الموسم والجنازة وفي تعلم العلم وتعليمه والجماع والمستراح وقضاء الحاجة والتغوط، قال أبو حنيفة لا يثني بلسانه وكذا الحائض والنفساء لا يجوز أذانهما وكذا ثناؤهما. اهـ. والمراد بالثناء الإجابة وكذا لا تجب الإجابة عند الأكل كما صرح به.

الدر المختار (ص: 57)

(ويجيب) وجوبا، وقال الحلواني ندبا، والواجب الإجابة بالقدم (من سمع الأذان) ولو جنبا لا حائضا ونفساء. (قوله: لا حائضا ونفساء) لأنهما ليسا من أهل الإجابة بالفعل فكذا بالقول إمداد: أي بخلاف الجنب فإنه مخاطب بالصلاة؛ ولأن حدثه أخف من الحيض والنفاس لإمكان إزالته سريعا.
