Is it permissible to design a heater for the army?

Answer

There is no harm in the work itself, hence it is permitted.

ولو آجر نفسه ليعمل في الكنيسة ويعمرها فلا بأس به؛ إذ ليس في نفس العمل معصية (المحيط البرهاني ص103 ج6)

وَلَوْ اسْتَأْجَرَ الذِّمِّيُّ مُسْلِمًا لِيَبْنِيَ له بِيعَةً أو كَنِيسَةً جَازَ وَيَطِيبُ له الْأَجْرُ كَذَا في الْمُحِيطِ (الفتاوي الهندية ص 450 ج4)
