Are breastfeeding mothers excused from fasting during Ramadaan?
Published as Fasting for a breastfeeding mother during Ramadaan
Question
Are breastfeeding mothers excused from fasting during Ramadaan?
Answer
If the breastfeeding mother fears that her health will deteriorate (by breastfeeding) and it will affect her health or the child’s health, then it will be permissible for her to omit fasting, and she may make up for the missed fasts after Ramadaan. However, she should only omit fasting if she is advised by an expert Muslim doctor to do so, or it is known through experience that she or her baby will encounter health problems.
