Question

Q. May one read surahs and ayahs near the graves of one’s relatives?

Answer

It is permissible and rewarding to recite verses from the Qur’an and Surahs at the graveside of deceased Muslims. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (Radiallahu Anhu) narrates that he heard the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) saying,

“When a person passes away, do not keep him in the house for long. Make haste in taking him to the grave and burying him and recite Surah al-Fatihah at his head side and the last verses of Surah al-Baqarah by his feet at his grave” (Baihaqi, Shu’abul Iman, Hadith #: 8986)

From the abovementioned Hadith, it is understood that reciting the Qur’an at the graveside of a deceased Muslim is recommended and beneficial. Had it been devoid of benefit to the deceased, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) would not have recommended it.
