Question
Q. Is it permissible to engage in sport like Karate and Kickboxing?
Answer
It is permissible to engage in such sport with the following conditions:
a) Hitting directly on the face without protective gear should be avoided. In the Hadith, Rasulullah (Sallallahu Alaihi Wasallam) said:
إذا قاتل أحدكم فليجتنب الوجه
When you fight, then abstain from hitting the face
(Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith #: 2559, Narrated by Abu Hurayrah)
b) The sport should not cause one to neglect his Salaah or violate the laws of Shariah like the laws of Hijab or Aurah (covering the areas of the body that are required to be covered in Shariah)
c) It should not cause the person to neglect his priorities.
d) It should not be potentially injurious to the person’s health.
