Question

Q. What is the Intention or Dua for fasting?

Answer

An intention is an act of the heart. Thus if one has the intention in the heart for fasting, this is sufficient.

It is not required to verbally say the intention though doing so has been recommended by some Ulama. (Shaami 2/380)

If a person wishes to verbalise it, one may say,

Allahumma asumu ghadan laka faghfirlee

We are unaware of a specific Sunnah Dua for commencing the fast.

And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best
