Question & Answer Al-Jamiat Vol 9 (5/7)
Question
How long is the time of the night prayer (Esha)? When is it better to perform it?
Answer
According to the Hanafi Madhab, the time for this Salaah starts from night and ends at dawn (when Sehri ends). Night refers to the disappearance of the whiteness on the western horizon. After this whiteness disappears the time of Isha Salaah sets in. (al-Lubab, Vol: 1, Pg: 59)
The most preferable time to perform this Salaah, according to the Hanafi Madhab is just before one third of the night passes. (Tabyinul Haqa’iq, Vol: 1, Pg: 83)
However, when stipulating the time for Jamaat, we should consider the convenience of the people in the locality.
Where scholars differ, it’s safer to take the more cautious view.
