How to Calculate Zakāh?
Question
Assalamu alaykum. How do you calculate zakat?
Answer
As salām ʿalaikum wa raḥmatullāhī wa barakātuhu
In the Name of Allāh, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
You may follow these steps to calculate your Zakāh:
- Cash & Investments – Add the total amount of all your cash (whether on hand or in the bank) and any investments.
- Gold & Silver – Weigh any gold or silver in your possession and determine its value based on the current market price.
- Business Goods – Include the total value of any business stock or trade goods that you own.
- Debts – Subtract any debts that you owe to others.
If the final total exceeds the Niṣāb threshold, you will calculate 2.5% of that amount and give it as Zakāh.
And Allāh Taʿālā knows best.
Where scholars differ, it’s safer to take the more cautious view.
