Four rakaats after Zuhr and Isha

Question

Great virtues are mentioned in the Ahadith for praying 4 rakaats after Zuhr and Isha.

Should one perform these apart from the confirmed 2 rakaats sunnah that are prayed after Zuhr and Isha i.e. first 2 rakaats and then 4 rakaats? And these 4 rakaats should they be prayed with one taslim or 2 by 2 rakaats?

Answer

In our understanding it is the two sunnats and two nafls that come after the Zuhr and the nafl that may come after the sunnats of Esha.

عن علي قال : كان النبي صلى الله عليه و سلم يصلي قبل الظهر أربعا وبعدها ركعتين (جامع الترمذي رقم 424)

عن أم حبيبة قالت : قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه و سلم من صلى قبل الظهر أربعا وبعدها أربعا حرمه الله على النار (جامع الترمذي رقم 427)
