The difference between Witr Salaah and Maghrib Salaah

Question

Is there an authentic hadeeth that states that one should not read witr in the same pattern that the fardh of maghrib is performed in? If so, please state the hadeeth with reference.

Answer

This Hadith is an authentic Hadith that appears in the Mustadrak of Imaam Haakim #1138. The meaning of this Hadith, as explained by the great commentator of Hadith, Hazrat Mulla Ali Qaari (Rahmatullahi Alaih), is that one should recite the Qunoot in the witr salaah and should not resemble it to the maghrib salaah that is performed without reciting the Qunoot.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.

عن أبي هريرة عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم قال لا توتروا بثلاث ولا تشبهوا بصلاة المغرب أوتروا بخمس أو بسبع هذا حديث صحيح على شرط الشيخين ولم يخرجاه (مستدرك حاكم رقم 1138)

ومن أعجب العجاب أن بعضهم كره وصل الثلاث وبه أفتى القاضي حسين أخذا من حديث لا يعرف له أصل صحيح لا توتروا بثلاث وأوتروا بخمس أو سبع ولا تشبهوا الوتر بصلاة المغرب مع أنه لو صح لحمل على أول الأمر لما سيأتي من الأحاديث الصحيحة الصريحة أنه - عليه السلام - صلى الوتر ثلاثا موصولا أو المراد منه النهي التنزيهي عن الاقتصار في صلاة الليل على ثلاث ركعات ويؤيده قوله أوتروا بخمس أو سبع للإجماع على جواز الثلاث وعلى عدم وجوب الخمس والسبع وقوله عليه الصلاة والسلام لا تشبهوا الوتر بصلاة المغرب أي في أنه لا يسبقه صلاة أو بأن يكون بلا قنوت (مرقاة المفاتيح (3/940)
