Is midnight calculated as the halfway point between sunset and sunrise, or sunset and subh saadiq?
Published as Performing witr or qiyaamul layl after midnight
Question
1. Is midnight calculated as the halfway point between sunset and sunrise, or sunset and subh saadiq?
2. Is there some valid difference of opinion in the Hanafi Madhab on the above?
3. Is there more reward if witr is performed after midnight?
4. Is there more reward if tahaujjud is performed after midnight?
Answer
1. Midnight will be the halfway point between sunset and subh saadiq because the night in the Islamic time commences with Maghrib. But if you are talking about performing qiyaamul layl, then qiyaamul layl refers to the salaah that is done anytime from after esha till subuh saadiq.
2. We have not come across any such difference of opinion.
3. For the person who is sure that he will wake up, it is better to perform the witr after tahajjud. Tahajjud is any namaaz that is performed after waking up before subh saadiq.
4. As above. The namaaz that is read after some sleep is more virtuous. Generally, the last portion of the night has the greatest virtue.
And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
