Question

What is the difference between sadaqah-e-jaariyah and esaal-e-thawaab? Which of the two refers to giving charity for deceased people, and which refers to gaining ongoing reward for oneself?

Answer

Sadaqah-e-jaariyah refers to an act that brings about recurring reward, such as digging a borehole. Esaal-e-thawaab is where you wish to convey the thawaab of a deed to a person. The same sadaqah-e-jaariyah can be dedicated for esaal-e-thawaab.

And Allah Ta'ala knows best.
