Question
1. How many rakaats can I pray for Tahajjud, without including witr?
2. How many rakaats of Ishraaq can I pray, and when is the time for Ishraaq?
3. When is Chaasht prayer time if Zuhr is at 12:41? And how many rakaats should I pray for Chaasht Salaah?
4. As for Awwaabeen Salaah, how many rakkats can I pray?
Please include any mustahab surah’s that I should recite in the rakaats. e.g. For Ishraq first rakaat, recite Ayat-ul-kursi, and for the second rakaat, recite Surah Ikhlaas.
Answer
1. The least rakaats one can perform of Tahajjud Salaah is two rakaats. The general practice of Nabi (sallallahu alaihi wasallam) was that he used to perform eight rakaats of Tahajjud. Sometimes he would perform eight rakaats in sets of fours and sometimes in sets of twos.
2 & 3. The time of Ishraaq and Chaasht commence from after sunrise till zawaal (i.e. after fifteen to twenty minutes from sunrise). However, it is better to perform the Ishraaq in the first half and Chaasht in the second half of this time. If Ishraaq is performed in the second half and Chaasht in the first half, it will also be permissible. One may perform 2 or 4 rakaats for Ishraaq salaah.
One may perform between 2 to 12 rakaats for Chaasht. For further details regarding the virtue of performing Chaasht Salaah, refer to http://muftionline.co.za/node/639.
4. One may perform two rakaats, four rakaats or six rakaats with the niyyat of Awwaabeen. If one wishes, one may perform more than six rakaats of Awwaabeen. For further details, refer to http://muftionline.co.za/node/11474.
And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.
