Question

Is it necessary to deactivate the social media account of a deceased person? The person only has a few photos on their account.

Answer

If there is only halaal content on the account which is beneficial for people, then deleting the entire account is not necessary. However, if there is haraam content (e.g. pictures of animate objects, videos, music, etc.), then the haraam content should be deleted. As long as the haraam content remains, the deceased will continue to receive punishment for it.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.

“This is not permissible. Through you building a social media app where users will post pictures of animate objects, you will be involved in the sin of photography as well as inviting others to commit this grave sin.”
