Keeping a dog as a pet due to loneliness

Question

I am aware of the fact that dogs cannot be kept as pets inside the apartment (or house) because their saliva is najis (impure). I am also aware of the fact that Islam is the most accommodating religion.

I am an OCD patient and I wanted to inquire the ruling on therapy dogs for anxiety/depression inside the apartment. I live in Canada and I do not have any family here to support me emotionally. Therefore, the anxiety kept growing until I became an OCD patient.

Answer

It is impermissible to keep a dog as a pet. The Hadith explains that the angels of mercy do not enter the home wherein a dog is kept. We suggest that you keep another animal besides a dog as a pet in order to give you some type of comfort.

And Allah Ta'ala (الله تعالى) knows best.

عن عبيد الله بن عبد الله أنه سمع ابن عباس رضي الله عنهما يقول: سمعت أبا طلحة يقول: سمعت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول: لا تدخل الملائكة بيتا فيه كلب ولا صورة تماثيل (صحيح البخاري، الرقم: ٣٢٢٥)

سمعت ابن عمر رضي الله عنهما عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: من اقتنى كلبا ليس بكلب ماشية أو ضارية نقص كل يوم من عمله قيراطان (صحيح البخاري، الرقم: ٥٤٨٠)

وفي الواقعات: لا ينبغي للرجل أن يتخذ كلبا في داره إلا كلبا يحرس ماله لأن كل دار فيها كلب لا يدخلها الملائكة وفي العيون: قرية فيها كلاب كثيرة ولأهل القرية منها ضرر يؤمر أرباب الكلاب بقتل الكلاب دفعا للضرر عنهم فإن أبوا رفعوا الأمر إلى الإمام حتى يأمرهم الإمام بذلك (المحيط البرهاني ٥/٢٥٣)

وفي الأجناس: لا ينبغي أن يتخذ كلبا إلا أن يخاف من اللصوص أو غيرهم وكذا الأسد والفهد والضبع وجميع السباع وهذا قياس قول أبي يوسف رحمه الله تعالى كذا في الخلاصة ويجب أن يعلم بأن اقتناء الكلب لأجل الحرس جائز شرعا وكذلك اقتناؤه للاصطياد مباح وكذلك اقتناؤه لحفظ الزرع والماشية جائز كذا في الذخيرة (الفتاوى الهندية ٥/٣٦١)
