If I die and have not paid off my interest free loan
Question
I have a question regarding debt. In the UK universities are now charging £9000 per year or so to cover the costs. If i take a student loan which is wiped off after 30 years, what would happen if i die and havent paid it all back? Also i want to ask the same question regarding a house mortgage?
Answer
Taking an interest free loan (i.e. student loan or house loan) is permissible in shariah provided one can manage paying back the loan within the stipulated period. Certain universities do have a provision that in the case of death, the debt will be waived. If this is the case, then there is no need for you to worry if you pass away before you pay off the loan.
