Is it permissible to work for Psybergate as a software developer?

Question

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh

I would like to enquire if it would be permissible to work for psybergate as a software developer . They are a software development company located in Johannesburg. They do software projects for companies that require their services, i am querying if it is permissible because they also do work in the financial field ie. Banks and insurance companies as well as other companies.

Also I am from Durban and this job would require me to relocate to Johannesburg. My father is not to happy about this and would like me to do honours next year but i feel the university lifestyle is not good for my iman and also I would like to be financially independent so I can get married soon InshAllah. Thus i also feel doing honors would delay this another year. Would it permissible to still take this job if my father is against it.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

We commend your concern for earning a halal income.

If the job requires you to develop such software which can be used for a permissible or impermissible purpose, then taking that job will be permissible. The onus of using the software in an impermissible way rests upon the person that uses it.

If the job requires you to develop such software which can only be used for an impermissible purpose, then taking that job will be impermissible as this will entail assisting another in sin.[1]

Perform istikharah to help you reach a decision in regards to your job. See Fatwa #41418 for more details on istikharah.
