Can I perform one Rak’aat as witr Salaah?

Question

Is there any such thing as a one/single rak'ah prayer? Are there any ahadeeth which declare a one rak'ah prayer as impermissible? For example, if I wanted to pray one rak'ah for witr, is there any hadith which tells me I am not allowed to?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

According to the Hanafi Madhab, the minimum number of Rak’aats is two. Witr is three Rak’aats with one salaam at the end of the third Rak’aat.

Therefore, it is not permissible to perform one Rak’aat as witr Salaah. [1]

أَنَّ الْوِتْرَ ثَلَاثُ رَكَعَاتٍ لَا يُسَلِّمُ إلَّا فِي آخِرِهِنَّ عِنْدَنَا، وَقَالَ الشَّافِعِيُّ - رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ - تَعَالَى: رَكْعَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ وَقَالَ مَالِكٌ - رَحِمَهُ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى -: ثَلَاثُ رَكَعَاتٍ بِتَسْلِيمَتَيْنِ

قوله: "ثلاث ركعات" بالتحريك وقد تسكن قوله: "كان يوتر بثلاث" وهذا مذهب الفقهاء السبعة وروى ابن أبي شيبة في مصنفه عن الحسن البصري قال أجمع السلف على أن الوتر ثلاث لا يسلم إلا في آخرهن وهو مذهب أبي بكر وعمر والعبادلة وأبي هريرة روي أنعمر رضي الله تعالى عنه رأى سعيدا يوتر بركعة فقال: ما هذه البتيراء تشفعها أو لأؤدبنك اهـ وروي أن سعد بن أبي وقاص أوتر بركعة فقال له عبد الله بن مسعود: ما هذه البتيراء ما أجزأت ركعة قط وروي أنه حلف على ذلك اهـ كذا في الشرح
