Question

Assalmoalaykum Is Asra valid name for a Muslim baby girl? What is the meaning of word Asra.. can you please suggest some other names for a girl child. JAZAK ALLAHU KHAIR

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Islam emphasizes that Muslims should have good names and give good names to their children.

It is the infant's vested right to be honoured with a good name. When choosing a name for the child, it should be done with the intention that the child will be blessed with the barakah of that name.

The name of a person has an effect on the individual’s personality and his/her characteristics. Therefore, we should try to adopt the names of the Ambiyaa (Alaihis-Salaam) and the companions (Sahabaah/Sahabiyyaah) of Nabi (ﷺ). [1]

Consider the following Ahaadeeth:

Translation: On the Day of Resurrection, you will be called by your names and by your father's names, so give yourselves good names.

(Sunan-Abu Dawood, Kitaabul Adab)

Asra means to travel at night. [2]

We advise you to keep one of the following names:
