Question

Asalamu Alaikum Mufti,

I've been having severe waswas and I don't know if I commited shirk. So, whilst I am praying and I reach the end of my Fatihah. The shayateen come to me and show me a bad looking person and they say if I say ameen then this will become true. So, I think of the name or the face of a good looking person then say ameen, with the intention of Allah making me look beautiful like that person. Have I commited shirk?

Answer

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

As-salāmu ‘alaykum wa-rahmatullāhi wa-barakātuh.

Respected Brother/Sister in Islam,

You are concerned about your Iman and you fear committing Shirk. That is a clear sign of your Iman[1]. Alhamdulilla.

In principle, if thoughts come to you which are beyond your control, you are excused[2]. Simply, ignore such thoughts. Your practice of fighting the thought of a bad looking person to a good looking person is not necessary. If you, simply, ignore the thoughts and Wasaawis, they will eventually go away[3]. Nevertheless, the thought of a good looking person and saying Ameen is not Shirk[4] .

And Allah Ta’ala Knows Best
