Question

Is it necessary to reply to the Iqaamah?

Answer

It is Mustahab to reply to the Iqaamah i.e. to repeat all the words of the Iqaamah after the Muazzhin. However, when the Muazzhin says:

قد قامت الصلاة

,then one should reply using one of the following words:

اقامها الله وادامها .1

اقامها الله وادامها ما دامت السماوات والارض .2

اللهم اقمها وادمها واجعلفي من صالحي اهلها .3

اقامها الله وادامها وجعلني من صالحي اهلها .4

Details of this can be found in the Fiqhi text of the Hanafi Mazh-hab (refer to the references cited below) and also in other works such as Imam Ibn ‘Allan Ash-Shafi’i’s commentary of Al-Azhkaar of Imam Nawawi Rahimahullah, entitled al-Futuhaatur Rabbaniyyah, volume two, pages 110 and 131.
