Attending school church mass
Question
Q. My son has to attend a church mass every Friday at school. They do not participate in any prayers but merely observe the prayer. Kindly advise if Islamically this is permissible or not.
Answer
Islamic Law does not permit Muslims to attend a church mass, even as observers.
While Islam advocates tolerance towards people of other faiths, allowing them the freedom to practice their religion, it however prohibits Muslims from participating in religious observances of other faith groups to protect a person’s Imaan from being corrupted and to preserve Islam from any type of adulteration.
Allah Ta’ala states in the Qur’an, “Say, “O disbelievers! I do not worship that which you worship; nor do you worship the One whom I worship. Nor will I worship those whom you have worshipped; nor will you worship the One whom I worship. To you is your religion, and to me is my religion!” (Surah Kaafiroon)

Where scholars differ, it’s safer to take the more cautious view.
